About Pisa and Lucca: the back story

Pisa and Lucca are twenty minutes apart by train and very different: Pisa with its white marble square and university, Lucca a calm walled city of churches and towers.

Lucca

Walk or cycle the walls, find the oval Piazza dell’Anfiteatro and visit Puccini’s birthplace.

Pisa’s Piazza del Duomo has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1987.

Around

The Villa Reale di Marlia and Butterfly, a starred restaurant, are just north of Lucca; Grotta Giusti and Montecatini are spa towns towards Florence.

Our advice: stay in Lucca and visit Pisa early, before the coaches.
