About The Maremma and the Argentario: the back story

The Maremma is Tuscany’s wild south: hot springs and hill villages inland, the lagoon of Orbetello and the rocky promontory of Monte Argentario on the coast.

Inland

Saturnia’s cascades, Pitigliano and the tufa towns, and Niki de Saint Phalle’s Tarot Garden near Capalbio.

The coast

Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano on the Argentario; Castiglione della Pescaia further north.

Caino, in the village of Montemerano, holds two MICHELIN stars (2026).

Eating

Caino, Il Pellicano, Bracali, Silene and La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini hold stars; L’Oste Dispensa and Il Sottomarino are Bib Gourmands.

Our advice: a car is essential; the distances are longer than they look.
