The back story

About Chianti: the back story

Chianti Classico is the hill country between Florence and Siena: Greve, Panzano, Castellina, Radda and Gaiole, the castles of the old wine families and the SR222 road that links them.

The villages

Greve has a market square; Castellina, Radda and Gaiole are hill villages with castles and estates around them.

The wine

Visit by booking: Antinori at Bargino, Brolio, Ama, Coltibuono and Fonterutoli are among the estates that open their cellars.

Chianti Classico has its own consortium, whose black rooster appears on every bottle (chianticlassico.com).

Eating

Osteria di Passignano, La Torre, Il Pievano and Poggio Rosso hold MICHELIN stars; La Toppa in San Donato in Poggio and Le Panzanelle near Radda are Bib Gourmands.

Our advice: choose a driver for the tasting days; the roads are narrow and winding.
