About Bolgheri and the Etruscan Coast: the back story

Bolgheri is a tiny walled village reached by a famous avenue of cypresses, at the heart of one of Italy’s youngest great wine areas, a few kilometres from the sea.

The village

Enter through the castle gate; the cypress avenue runs straight to San Guido.

The wine

The Bolgheri DOC covers the hills between Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona; visits to Ornellaia and San Guido are by appointment.

Bolgheri Sassicaia is the only Italian DOC belonging to a single estate, Tenuta San Guido (bolgheridoc.com).

The coast

La Pineta, at Marina di Bibbona, holds a MICHELIN star; Osteria Magona is a Bib Gourmand in the hills.

Our advice: combine the coast with a drive inland to the medieval villages of Castagneto and Suvereto.
